Keeper of the Plains

Keeper of the Plains

Keeper of the Plains is a 13.4 meter tall steel installment sculpture located at the juncture of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers. The sculpture was designed by Kiowa-Comanche artist Blackbear Bosin. Erected in 1974, the sculpture was elevated on a thirty feet tall rock pedestal in 2006.
Rock drums at the base light with fire for fifteen minutes at a time once a day. The City of Wichita provides the following information about the fire feature: "
During daylight savings time (spring and summer), the Keeper of the Plains “Ring of Fire” burns nightly at 9 p.m. for 15 minutes (weather/river conditions permitting). During standard time (fall and winter), the "Ring of Fire" burns nightly at 7 p.m. for 15 minutes (weather/river conditions permitting).
For public safety, the Ring of Fire is operated manually. The Ring of Fire will not be turned on during high winds, rain or other inclement weather, if the river level is too high, or if a person is too close to the burners.” - [http://www.wichita.gov/Government/Departments/Arts/Pages/Keeper-of-the-Plains.aspx]
The two pedestrian suspension bridges are inspired by the bow and arrow. Looking up the cables to the buckles gives an interesting architectural view.
